We chat to designer Lucie Heaton!

The talented designer Lucie Heaton chats about her recent stitchy finishes, the inspiration behind her designs, and her chickens!

You’ve been designing for Cross Stitch Crazy since issue one.
Can you pick a favourite?
It’s such a privilege to have been with Crazy from the start! My personal favourite is Cross Stitch Friends (below) from a set of designs I did for issue 108. It’s such a cute little motif which, to me, really sums up what cross stitch is about.
What would you say is the best thing about your job?
I love it when a new issue arrives so I can see the final stitched piece. I’m
always amazed by the beautiful stitching, and the way the pictures are styled by
the talented team.
Where do you find inspiration for all the designs you come up with?
I get inspired by cross stitchers themselves. Before I start a project I always sit back and try to think about who will stitch my designs, and for what occasion.
As a stitcher, which designs to do you like to stitch most?
My two most recent finishes were a pair of ready-to-stitch cuddly toys to welcome two new babies, which I personalised with their names and birth details. I love to stitch for family and friends!
What are your other passions? We hear you keep chickens!

Yes, I adore my chickens! At the moment, I have six hens and six recently hatched silkie bantam chicks, as well as a rooster called Bruce. I love to pop outside for a break during the day and have a chat with my little flock!
Issue 170 of Crazy featured your 1,000th Challenge Lucie request, where readers ask you to design a mini chart for them. What’s been the most memorable?
There’s been so many, but I think it is a banana playing the guitar from issue 72 (below) as it really made me giggle when I designed it. The Crazy readers certainly do send in some unique requests – I couldn’t make them up if I tried!
How does it feel to come to the rescue with these quirky charts?
It’s fab! Every month I look forward to seeing what the readers have come up with. I enjoy the variety and love being able to help with a chart they
wouldn’t find anywhere else.
Which other cross stitch designers do you especially admire, and why?
I admire all my fellow cross stitch designers and although we don’t often get a chance to meet, I always enjoy seeing their beautiful creations. I love how everyone has their own unique style and favourite subjects.
What can Crazy’s readers expect to see from you in future issues?
I want to get as many Challenge Lucie designs added to my Motif Library at www.lucieheaton.com as possible. I think it will be a great resource for stitchers, and there will be over 1,000 designs to choose from when I finish!
